"Ratio inspired my decision to start studying at the Academie voor Bouwkunst when I went to the Netherlands in 1967, instead of enrolling at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunst. After all, I had been trained for the building industry and life as an artist seemed rather precarious. Perhaps I should have paid better attention to my intuition.” In the end, the urge to paint gained the upper hand, and Ron Flu has been a professional artist for many years now.

Ron Flu often prefers themes that reflect his concern for those at the bottom of society, as well as his gloomy outlook on the situation in the country. “We should be an example to the younger generation, and show in our behavior what we expect of them. But often we don’t.” His style of painting is a unique blend of realism with distorted elements, cubism and naturalism.

The heroic amazons Ron Flu painted in 1992 are a tribute to the indigenous people. “As a Surinamese artist it is almost obligatory to pay attention to the first inhabitants of our country. Personally I feel the need to do so very strongly."
