The Paramaribo SPAN project has three formal platforms, distinct but interconnected: a blog; the exhibition which ran from 26 February to 14 March; and the book Paramaribo SPAN: Contemporary Art in Suriname/Hedendaagse Beeldende Kunst in Suriname/Arte Contemporânea do Suriname, launched at the SPAN opening last week.
The book is edited by Thomas Meijer zu Schlochtern and Christopher Cozier, and published in three language editions (English, Dutch, and Portuguese) by KIT Publishers, Paramaribo SPAN is not a catalogue of the exhibition, though it features most of the artists participating in the show. Rather, in Meijer's words, it asks "where do the visual arts stand in Suriname in 2010 and what are the prospects for the future?" The book tackles this complicated question from multiple angles: biographies of individual artists, critical essays and surveys of recent developments by members of the SPAN project team, and documentation of the exchanges instigated by the ArtRoPa initiative.

Suriname participates within the CARICOM Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China from May 1 till October 31, 2010.
In 2009 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked the Directorate of Culture to work in cooperation with the FVAS, Federation of Visual Artists in Suriname, on the project proposal concerning this participation of Suriname in the World Expo. A concept was formulated on the official theme ‘Better City, Better Life’ and the ideas of the public and private sector in Suriname. Stakeholders were already together in a steering group, since Ambassador Roy Wong Lun Hing was directed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2008, as the national coordinator for Suriname.
With the formulated concept, a team was engaged to work on the concept design of the National Suriname Booth of 320 m2. Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi was the artistic coordinator, with assistance of George Struikelblok who took care of logistics. Lalita Adhin, cultural policy officer of the Directorate of Culture, was involved with the public administration. Sergio Fung Loy van ABT, Adviesbureau BouwTechniek, have been shaping the concept into extraordinary architectural 3D-model, which is used by the Chinese service provider who constructed the booth in Shanghai China.
Various visual artists worked on artistic items, which gives a specific radiance to the National Suriname Booth. Jhunry Udenhout, Soeki Irokromo, George Struikelblok, Marcel Pinas have created multicultural totem poles. Daniel Djojoatmo decorated an ice venting cart. August Bohé, Ray Daal, Patrick Tjon Jaw Chong, Ardie Setropawiro, Anand Binda, Stanny Handigman, Sri Iridikromo, Roddney Tjon Poen Gie en Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi, made 3 diorama’s about agriculture, stockbreeding and fishery in Suriname. Soeki Irodikromo modelled a ceramic Eldorado. In China this ceramic model has been increased to gigantic proportions and placed in the Lake of Eldorado. On a screen a video film is shown about the exploration of gold in Suriname and its environmental problems. The consequences of irresponsible exploration do not only have a negative impact on the inhabitants in the interior, but also on the people in the city. Another screen shows the possibilities of ‘Doing Business in Suriname’. On a third screen, the cultural richness, biodiversity and heritage of Suriname is shown.
Photographer Roy Tjin contributed with scenery on the life of Indigenous people in Suriname. Photographer and graphic designer Hedwig de la Fuente also has part in the booth design with his Panorama for the back wall of the booth. | | | | Back to Top | | | | the one minutes nominees awards shanghai On March 19, 2010 George Struikelblok, visual artist of Suriname and vice chairman of the Federation of Visual Artists in Suriname, won a tommy award. previous tom news the one minutes awards 2009 will take place in the dutch culture center in shanghai on 19 march 2010. shanghai tv will build a tv studio for the ceremony and broadcast the show on their art channel. the winners will be announced during the show. keep checking our website for the latest information. every winner will receive a cash prize and a tommy award, the bronze monkey that owes its name to the abbreviation of the one minutes, tom. the categories for which you submitted your video are included in the different selections. please keep in mind that all cultural events including our awards ceremony is subject to chinese state control. we hope all the selected movies can be shown and we will inform makers if problems arise. and the the nominees are........ america: flamenco lesson by ivo van stiphout / flock of copters by allard zoetman / oscarland by su tomesen / new orleans - 05am by frank relle / alaska wedding by maaike van der linden / how do i live without you by katja van stiphout / anything beyond? by maite zabala / storm by brian mckenna / portretten by george struikelblok / dans sou beton 1 by accès médias city one minutes at world expo shanghai the world expo shanghai takes place from 1st of may till 31st of october 2010. in the urban footprints pavilion we will exhibit the city one minutes on 24 screens, which show one city each minute. the selected cities are ... abu dhabi / accra / addis ababa / amman / amsterdam / antwerp / ardes / asmara / athens / baghdad / bamako / bangalore / bangkok / banjul / barcelona / beijing / belgrade / berlin / bratislava / brussels / buenos aires / cairo / calcutta / cape town / chisinau / chongqing / dallas / detroit / dhaka / dubai / glasgow / gothenburg / groningen / guangzhou / hangzhou / hanoi / havana / hohhot / hongkong / istanbul / jerusalem / juneau / kaliningrad / kansas city / kathmandu / kuala lumpur / las vegas / lijiang / lille / lima / lisbon / ljubljana / london / los angeles / maputo / mexico city / moscow / mumbai / nanjing / naples / new delhi / new orleans / new york / odessa / oostende / osaka / ouagadougou / paramaribo / paris / port au prince / qingdao / ramallah / reykjavik / rio de janeiro / rome / san francisco / sana'a / santiago / são paulo / sarajevo / shanghai / singapore / skopje / sofia / st petersburg / stockholm / sydney / taipei / tbilisi / teheran / tel aviv / tirana / tokyo / toronto / trieste / ulan bator / venice / vienna / warsaw / willemstad / wuhan / xiamen / yogyakarta / zurich Read more at www.theoneminutes.org www.cityoneminutes.org | | | | Back to Top | | | | TEMBE ART STUDIO
On February 27, 2010 Marcel Pinasofficially opened his TEMBE ART STUDIO in Moengo in the District of Marowijn. On March 5, 2010 the Team of Readytex Art Gallery sent this press release:
Surinamese artist Marcel Pinas nominated Young Global Leader, a recognition of remarkable young leaders by the World Economic Forum in Geneva
Paramaribo, 5 March 2010
On the 27th of January artist Marcel Pinas received the good news. His nomination for Young Global Leaders 2010 was accepted. As of the 3rd of March he may call himself officially Young Global Leader (YGL).
This position is only bestowed on remarkable young leaders who have a global vision, and who have shown through their remarkable contributions and intensive involvement to serve society in a notable manner.
Each year thousands of candidates from the whole world are nominated and judged according to strict selection criteria. From all candidates 200 to 300 of the most striking individuals are selected who will be part of this powerful international community that has the capacity to have a significant influence on our global future. Young Global Leaders comprise some of the most conspicuous leaders from different sectors and from the whole world. Among the other YGLs this year are the artist Wyclef Jean, who made the headlines in the past weeks for his efforts to help the victims in Haiti, Marlene Malahoo Forte, Jamaican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Swiss Tennis player Roger Federer and Evan Williams, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Internet phenomenon Twitter.
The title is awarded by the World Economic Forum, an international non-profit organization who regularly brings together world leaders from the public and private sectors to discuss important issues and deal with them.
In July 2009 artist Marcel Pinas was nominated by Jennifer Baarn of the World Economic Forum for the Forum of Young Global Leaders. Baarn who knows the work and the international recognition of Marcel Pinas as artist visited together with the artist his birthplace in the District of Marowijne in 2008. Pinas is intensively involved in a project that will significantly improve especially the future of youths in Marowijne. This project includes an art park, a cultural centre and many other plans and initiatives in and around the City of Mungo, which are all based on the power of art and culture to positively influence the life and future perspectives of the population of Marowijne. Marcel Pinas uses his international art career as a platform for his ambitious plans in the District of Marowijne and at the same time positions his country of birth on the world map. The theme of the art of Marcel Pinas is Kibri A Kulturu (foster/ preserve culture). Through his international activities and exhibitions, which he uses to propagate the unique Maroon culture and simultaneously raises the many problems these communities are faced with, he is building a worldwide network of contacts that are kindly disposed towards his project and provide him with actual support.
In her letter of nomination to the Forum, Jennifer Baarn writes amongst other things: “His activities and impact are full circle, reflecting environmental, cultural, historical, entrepreneurial, leadership social and economic aspects. If this award is about engaging outstanding pioneers with experience around challenges facing our generation and generating creative solutions, I cannot foresee a more appropriate participant than Marcel Pinas.”
In the preparations for his nomination Jennifer Baarn was assisted by the team of Readytex Art Gallery that prepared the necessary documentation. The nomination was furthermore supported by letters of recommendation from the President of the Republic of Suriname, His Excellency Drs. R.R. Venetiaan, and Willem Jan Schrofer, Director of the State Academy in the Netherlands.
In a letter from the Forum for Young Global Leaders Marcel received on the 27th of January the good news: “It is with great pleasure that we inform you that you have been honoured as a Young Global Leader (YGL) 2010. This honour is bestowed by the World Economic Forum each year to recognize the most distinguished young leaders nominated below the age of 40 from around the world. The Selection Committee, composed of the world’s top media leaders and chaired by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, selected you after carefully screening the profiles of thousands young leaders from every region of the world and from a myriad of disciplines and sectors. Your nomination is in recognition of your record of professional accomplishments, your commitment to society and your potential to contribute to shaping the future of the world through your inspiring leadership.”
The network of Young Global Leaders organizes throughout the year regular events including the YGL Top conferences, where the YGLs have the opportunity to meet, exchange ideas and discuss how they will actively direct the future. YGLs form together a unique community that has the potential to significantly influence the life of future generations and that can put forward innovative solutions for global and regional challenges.
It should be noted that Marcel Pinas is one of few artists that have been recognized in the past years as YGL. Possibly Pinas will be able to provide new ideas and impulses from his perspective as artists to the YGL community. With his appointment as Young Global Leader a world of possibilities opens up for Marcel Pinas.
